You asked for it! Local sports arrive at EastIdahoNews.com

We have some big news that we have been waiting for a long time.

EastIdahoNews.com now has a sports section!

The management is in the hands of Kalama Hines and Allan Steele, who are no strangers to the local sports world.

You probably know Kalama from his last four years as a general reporter in Pocatello. Before joining us, he was a sports reporter in California. He enjoys playing and covering competitive sports. He is now the sports director of EastIdahoNews.com.

Allan, our sports reporter, has nearly 30 years of experience in sports reporting. From 2019 until he joined us last month, he managed the sports departments of the Post Register in Idaho Falls and the Standard Journal in Rexburg.

In addition to two full-time staff members, the EastIdahoNews.com sports team is made up of freelance writers and photographers from the Idaho Falls, Rexburg and Pocatello areas.

In a few days, Kalama and Allan will tell you about their plans to cover sports in our area. But they are already hard at work, having visited many local games in eastern Idaho over the past month. Our coverage so far is on the East Idaho Sports homepage at www.eastidahonews.com/sports. You can check out the East Idaho Sports Facebook group here.

Why did it take so long?

Sports has been our most requested feature since we launched in 2015. We were quite small back then, with just two journalists (Nate Eaton and Nate Sunderland). We quickly realised we couldn’t cover everything. Some things had to wait.

As we’ve grown over the years, we’ve expanded our coverage to include a variety of topics including obituaries, weather, local election coverage, Feel Good Friday, Secret Santa, East Idaho Eats, Looking Back and Biz Buzz.

Sports has been a long-term goal for us since the beginning. While we could have put something together years ago, we waited to do it right. Local sports are more than a sideshow for many of you, and we wanted our coverage to reflect that. With our current staff and capabilities, we feel that now is the time for EastIdahoNews.com Sports.

And our sports team wants to hear from you! Whether you want to submit photos, tips, scores or feedback, you can reach them here.

See you at the game!
