More than 200 charges filed under vehicle safety initiative

The Lambton Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) has announced the results of the ‘Operation Safe Driver’ campaign that ran from July 7 to 14.

The campaign, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, aimed to improve road safety and reduce accidents involving trucks and passenger cars.

They focused on promoting safe driving behavior, such as obeying the speed limit and avoiding distractions or driving under the influence, and made sure all loads were properly secured.

A total of 17 charges were filed for the use of commercial vehicles, six of which related to having improper documentation.

A total of 198 traffic-related motor vehicle fines were issued.

OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique commented on the campaign.

“Aggressive and careless drivers have no place on our roads, especially when it involves large commercial vehicles sharing the road,” Carrique said. “Tragically, many families are paying a devastating price again this year — the senseless, preventable loss of their loved ones — because of drivers who make a conscious decision not to share our roads safely.”

The OPP reminds commercial vehicle drivers the importance of conducting thorough pre-departure inspections, carrying necessary documentation, being aware of weight and load restrictions, and ensuring their vehicles are regularly maintained and inspected annually.
